Class Acts
8/10/2004

Something happened to the Class of '91 during its senior year. A cluster of brights minds, appealing personalities and hilarious characters, the class bonded in an extraordinary manner. It's a class that likes itself, and loves Proctor. It contains several young leaders who are committed to the school and our future. Caroline Heatley '91, known affectionately to her social entourage as "Heater," "Train Wreck," and even "Freakshow," is the Athletic Coordinator at Southfields School (MA). She is also a professional rink rat and is a coach at ELITE hockey program held at Dartmouth's Thompson arena for almost 200 high school girls this month.

Women's ice hockey is a world with its own jargon....its own language. When a player jukes a defender at the blueline, she "uses her like a rented mule." Hit the post with a shot and you've "rung the phone." Hack agressively at the puck along the boards and you're a "blender." Here, Heater drops the biscuit:

After an early morning workout and drills, we head to The Hop for breakfast sandwiches and hockey talk. Coaches at this and other intense camps and clinics get three things out of the experience. First, it's a livelihood. Like any successful educator, there's the satisfaction of advancing something--in this case a phenomenally fast-growing sport. In addition, coaches come to know virtually all of the best young talent. This knowledge enables the right talent to find the right school or college. It's recruitment. Heatley (R) with Kristen King of the United States National Hockey Team.

The Elite program at Dartmouth is just one more intense hockey commitment for the participants. As Kristin and Heater observed, "They're cooked." Below, high fives during a relaxing chalk talk in the dorm.

The smile hasn't changed.
Heater "dangles in the phonebooth."
She can still powder the one-timer....
...and go coast to coast.
You need to be able to use the lumber.
A few words of encouragement for Proctor's Emma Poole '06.
