Over the course of four years, small miracles occur here, as ninth graders become--well--seniors. Here are some ninth graders, today, the last day of school.

What are they doing? They're pressuring Alex into riding his bike into the pond at high speed. There's nothing wrong with this; it is their own ritual for culminating the year.

Throwing someone in the pond, of course, is prohibited. These freshmen are only pretending to carry Jamie to that fate.

Lining up to rehearse tomorrow's graduation processional, senior girls are the very image of sensible maturity and grace, treasuring every last moment.

Senior boys project a less patient disposition....something more like, "Just give me a diploma."

Proctor is not a school steeped in ritual, yet we devise our own special ways to observe rites of passage.
No vespers, nor solemn baccalaureate here.
Younger students find their own ways to mark the end of the academic year.
Next year, as sophomores, they may find new ceremonies that meet their needs.
Yet, my experience is you never know....
Perhaps they'll master a kick flip.
