Proctor Academy - Formalities

In 1971, at the height of the social angst that typified the Vietnam War era, Proctor convulsed with change. A veteran of six years in various teaching and administrative roles, David Fowler became Head of School and ushered in a period of dramatic transition. Among these changes was the termination of a coat and tie dress code that had been in effect for decades. The new informality--which extended to a first-name social ethos--signified new priorities. Structure would now exist where it made common sense to students: academic life, attendance, behavior.... But we stopped hassling kids about hair length, and the dress code became "neat and clean." Perhaps it is this informality that makes the annual "Spring Formal" dance such a special event.
