Forty-something years ago, as athletic leagues coalesced, schools chose mascots. Today, we compete aginst Bulls, Rams, Bobcats, Wildcats, and many other noble creatures.
With little or no documented process, Proctor athletes became Hornets. It's interesting that this repugnant, aggressive, pain-inflicting creature served us well since 1971, given Proctor's nature, which is somehow otherwise.
But the nature of hornets is not the issue. The problem is that it is very difficult to replicate this insect graphically on a uniform or helmet. We tried desperately. We gave money to graphic designers. It didn't work. A year ago, we decided to explore alternatives. Our goal was to make this a fun, inclusive process that results in a mascot that represents the pride and character of this school.
Ninja Hackers was never really in play...
But what would work for Proctor?
This is a very proud school, with a great deal of cultural integrity. Freeport High School, Illinois may be the Pretzels, but baked goods aren't going to cut it here.
An initial polling survey yielded three final candidates: Panthers, Black Bears and Hornets (which do not die easily!). Which will we be? Students have rendered initial drawing of the final contestants, and will be voting along with parents and alumni in the weeks ahead.
Here, fans cheer on the Proctor Panthers.
And here are the Black Bears pressing against Philips Exeter; (we don't "maul" them, do we?)
As always, the Hornets advance...
