We have enjoyed two very successful alumni gatherings in Boston and New York over the past week. For a veteran employee, these events are educational. This is Mike speaking at the New York gathering Monday night at Landmarc Restaurant in the Time Warner Building at Columbus Circle.
Attending an alumni gathering is an educational experience for me. People I knew as students--just like the students I know today--are now business entrepreneurs, civic leaders, film makers (lots of these!), mothers, fathers, lovers and friends. I'm seeing people I haven't seen since 2011 mingling with people I haven't seen since 1977.
Being with alumni--former students--who span decades, all in one room, is a life education. Here are confident, successful adults who credit Proctor for their personal transformation. They don't know each other, but they network the room knowing that they have one thing....very special and very powerful....in common. Middle-aged alumni offer job opportunities to recent graduates. They know what it is to be supported and challenged by real-life experience.
And then, suddenly, I'm back on campus with teenagers who will be at these events in a few years, (and in 20 and 30 years).
Soon, these students will be attending alumni receptions in Boston, New York, and elsewhere. Many will be established entrepreneurs, with partners, spouses and families. Time passes, and Proctor students become Proctor advocates.
