An unintended benefit of trimester-long off-campus programs is the sense of newness...a kind of community rebirth...that occurs as thirty-something students return to Andover for the start of a term.
This phenomenon is particularly pronounced today, at the start of the winter term, when 130 students who were new in September observed the return of 22 from Ocean Classroom, 8 from Proctor in Spain and 3 from Costa Rica. Aside from the energy and enthusiasm communicated by returnees, this process provides a new incarnation of the community.
Returning students stood for a rousing welcome in assembly.
New students witness the affection of returning kids integrating with friends whom they have missed since the end of May (or--in a few cases--since February, when the other kid departed for spring term away.)
Meanwhile, students returning from off-campus programs enter an on-campus community which (having said "goodbye" to 30 kids for the winter) is 43% new students! And most of these 130 new students have grown to be very comfortable at Proctor.
