I think of the term "extracurricular" to mean everything we do outside of the academic curriculum, but my dictionary adds the adjective "regular" as follows: "Outside the regular curriculum or program." So defined, the term fails to apply to sports, afternoon activities, arts, and student activities at Proctor, all of which are integrated and "regular."
Surely one of the great non-extracurricular events of this academic year was the September 30 girls' varsity soccer game played under portable lights in front of hundreds of crazed fans. Entitled
Friday Night Lights, the game was a triumph for school spirit, female athletics, and our appreciation for lighted athletic venues.
One outcome, it might be argued, is the recent commitment by Trustees to build an artificial turf field (this summer) at the north end of Farrell Field. It will serve several sports, but lacrosse is the huge beneficiary, due to the simple fact that snow can be plowed off enabling early spring practice and play.
Look closely, and you'll find the ball about two feet above ground in the net.
Austin puts this one away, you can be sure.
Everyone benefits from the turf field. This is junior varsity, if you can believe it....
The plan is for the baseball diamond to be relocated to the southwest corner of Carr Field.
On the topic of not-extracurricular, we have a stunningly talented bike racing team!
Join us on Farrell Field for the second "Friday Night Lights" event, Friday at 7:00PM, when boys' varsity lacrosse hosts the New Hampton Huskies. It is certain to be an historic moment!
