Spring Family Weekend
4/24/2009
The better part of two hundred parents and grandparents are here for Spring Family Weekend. Over night, it seems, the campus turned green, daffodils bloomed and the temperatures soared.

Our visitors attend Friday morning classes and assembly before parent/teacher conferences.

The value of family weekends is undeniable. The exchange of insights between parents and teachers is mutually beneficial, and folks come away with an appreciation for the school that is grounded in direct experience.

Just seeing their kids' involvement with peers is a kick!

In preparation for an upcoming quiz, Wildlife Science went "into the field" to identify diverse species. Willows, grey birch and dogwood thrive in the wetlands bordering the Blackwater River.

Fields, small farms and open lands that abut woodlands offer "edge environments" that are ideal wildlife habitats. Proctor actually plants corn in the middle of this floodplain simply to feed birds, deer and bear.

A pine snag--home to thousands of bees--qualifies as a "honey tree." Why is their population failing regionally?
A pileated woodpecker provided honey bees the entrance/egress.
