When I first came to Proctor, the school's strongest ski racer was a day student named Garry George. Today--in addition to other responsibilities--Garry is Hill Manager of the Blackwater Ski Area. On Sunday, the Blackwater was the center of the ski universe, as we hosted the Macomber Cup, a USSA series that attracts the area's most competitive racers, including athletes from Dartmouth, UNH, Boston College and Plymouth State.

Our little gem of a ski area was mobbed. Incidentally, the New England Lost Ski Area Project just updated its listing for the Blackwater. NELSAP is a fascinating organization, researching the small, mostly defunct ski hills that meant so much to so many skiers over the decades. The Blackwater qualifies for inclusion because it is small and private.
The snack bar in Yarrow's Lodge was busy!

Due to the extraordinary competition, a high school racer in the Macomber top 10 is a real accomplishment! So, it boggles the mind to think that the number one ranked Mac Cup male skier is our own Geoff Bonewald!

But that's not all....   Two skiers are tied for first female: senior Bridget Gilroy and sophomore Kerry Daigle!

Here's Bridget:

Proctor's talent and depth is amazing.  This is four-year power racer John Arnold:

This was a great day for the Blackwater, for Proctor skiing, and it was Kerstin's birthday!

Many thanks to our friend Doug Peel for the action images.
