Passing through Andover, on busy Routes 11 and 4 (it's Main Street), one's attention is drawn to the north slope of Blackwater Hill, bathed in nothing but shade at this moment of the year, so close to the winter solstice.
As blue and dormant as it appears, it is a truly bustling venue for skiers and jumpers who come from many directions. Proctor is on vacation, but students, past students, future students and coaches are here, making the best of a frigid, blustery afternoon.
Up close at Yarrow's Lodge......
We're technically on vacation. Skiers from area high schools are here for a jumping clinic, while some of our top Eastern skiers are both training and helping young Proctor skiers progress.
A warm stove helps.
Exiting the lodge....
Prepping the giant slalom track:
English teach Karin Clough's (right) kids got ski equipment for Christmas (after years in Kenya,) and have taken to the slopes like fish to water.
J1 senior John Arnold.
Today's athletes include eighth and nine grade prospects, who are in line to continue Porctor's skiing legacy. These kids dominated at Crotched Mountain last week.
Thanks to Doug Peel for the photo.
