Lessons of Third Soccer
10/6/2006

Foliage is peaking in Andover, NH. The sun is shining; temperatures are mild and we have not experienced a killing frost. Cars from Massachusetts are everywhere.

Third soccer appeals to me. Perhaps this reflects the years I spent playing lower level sports in high school. Or it could be fond memories from the years that I coached third soccer back in the Twentieth Century. Today's squad is a spirited, very positive team.

A "JV2" team from Holderness came to Carr Field the other day. The Bulls exhibited superior soccer skills, and won handily. For a varsity team, a 6-2 loss might be demoralizing. For third soccer, it was another learning experience.

My advisee, Keegan, is a natural leader on the field. Here, he throws in front of the Holderness bench.

Below, he reacts to the first of his two goals (observe the ball in net.)

After the game, the team formed a circle at midfield to stretch and talk things over. Before scattering, they came to together for a cheer in support of their goalkeeper.

Coach Dave Salathe summed it up nicely: "I couldn't ask anything more of you...."

Dylan beats his man for the ball.
Peppered with shots all afternoon, Reed received a special cheer of support from his teammates.
