I came up from UNH early in 1976 to interview with school Head David Fowler for a history internship. I wore a suit; he had jeans and a work shirt. In the course of my campus tour, he told me that Proctor was always seeking the right balance of "structure and love." I remember thinking that most school Heads probably didn't mention "love" during job interviews. Now, with hindsight, I recognize that a healthy community needs to validate the emotions of its members. Due to the amount of love here, Valentine's Day is elevated to a holiday of great significance and ritual at Proctor. Yesterday we gave each other more than 800 "love-grams"--carnations (each color with special significance) with a note. Here are some student leaders prepping love-grams for mailboxes:
