Birthday Rituals
4/27/2005

The wind was out of the east on Proctor Pond this morning, foretelling more heavy rain which prompted the cancellation of all games except varsity boys' lax. No matter. We still have warm memories from Tuesday, when Admission Director Chris Bartlett '86 used Steve Wilkins's 50th birthday as an opportunity to educate us to diverse cultural birthday observations. Take, for example, the "Happy Birthday" song. An octet serenaded Steve with a tight, hilarious spin-off in front of the whole school in assembly.

Prior to that, however, Chris called on students from different nationalities to practice their relatively torturous expressions of affection on these special days. We don't have any students from Israel at the moment, but several self-selected chosen ones tossed Steve high overhead.

Other rituals are documented at right. Eventually, Chris cited the American tradition of beautiful women leaping out of birthday cakes. Proctor's beautiful baker, Edna Peters, wheeled one in instead.

Following assembly, Sarah Wilkins made off with the balloons. Notice the blue sky. That was yesterday.

This is today:

Harbinger of flood warnings: the wind blew out of the east this morning over Proctor Pond.
Rafael got some assistance from Chris Bartlett executing the Brazilian custom of tugging on the lobes repeatedly.
English teacher Jane Barban applies grease to Steve's nose in a Maritime Canadian practice she denies exists.
Jeremy starts applying 50 punches in Quebecoise fashion. Steve interrupted the process with a couple of return jabs.
Isha applies yogurt to Steve's ample forehead in traditional Nepalese style.
