Sunday Fun
1/16/2005

Students respond to the lack of structure on Sundays in different ways. Some sleep until mid-afternoon. Some play Halo 2. Some will go on off-campus trips. Some will whine about boredom, but not those who initiate their own winter games.

With help from the Zamboni, the Maintenance Department and mother nature, snowborders and freestyle skiers have constructed a terrain park on Observatory Hill in front of Johnson House (the observatory is long gone).

These kids, of course, don't call it a terrain park. They speak a foreign language. This is a backyard jib jam.

You descend from the top of an artificial hill, gain speed, vault off a jump and slide sideways on a rail. The trick is to survive standing up, and continue down the rest of the hill. It's a co-ed event.

Whether or not you succeed, it is appropriate to announce, "That was awesome!" at the end.

Pond hockey requires extra strength because you have to push the puck through snow shavings.
Will shows us how it's done. You vault off a jump....
...land on the rail...
...and slide the length of it. Nothing could be more fun.
This is another event. First, Nick prepares the course by packing snow securely around an inverted trash barrell.
He boldly gains speed on his snowboard, approaching the obstacle he plans to slide up and over.
Oh, well. That was awesome.
Mack is making a video of the whole thing.
After a vigorous Sunday outdoors, students return to classes ready to go!
