National Honor Society Induction

Like almost every high school in the United States, Proctor recognizes scholarship, service, leadership and demonstration of character within the community by inducting members of the graduating class into the National Honor Society. Proctor's Alan S. Bursaw Chapter of the National Honor Society was formed in 1966 and has since inducted hundreds of students over the past 46 years.



While Proctor's mission of focusing on individual growth within each and every student may seem to contradict recognition of academic excellence among a select group of students, the induction committee looks at potential inductees in a holistic manner. Academic excellence qualifies the student, but service, character, and leadership qualities weigh equally in the process.



During each induction ceremony (one in the fall and one in the spring), a small group of students are recognized for their achievements and contributions to the community.



This spring, the community recognized Alice Anastacia, Breanna Davis, Do Yun Kim, Taylor Pearlman, Ryan Saunders, Micahaela Trefethan, and Kelsey Wilcox for their hard work during their time at Proctor as they joined previous inductees Tyler Graf, Kate Kozain, Sage Morison, Klare Nevins, Tyler Lingel, and Brad Prevel as the National Honor Society inductees from the class of 2012.

Each has not only excelled in the classroom, but has been heavily involved in a variety of activities on campus ranging from school leader positions, to varsity athletics, to PEA, volunteering in science labs and and excelling in the arts.



The dynamism of this induction class is representative of the entire graduating class, as the demonstrated excellence in a tremendous breadth of disciplines is astounding. Among the inductees, 54 AP classes were taken, 50 terms of varsity sports played, ten terms spent abroad and seventeen years of student leadership volunteered. This group of students has served as school leaders, dorm leaders, earned excellence in English and Spanish awards, earned the Robert M. Downey Award for Excellence in Graphics and Digital Editing, the Marvin Award, and have been integral to the spring musical each year.



The beauty of academic excellence at Proctor is that it need not be mutually exclusive from full engagement in the community. In fact, as students pursue academic excellence, they are drawn into other facets of the community. The leader in the classroom evolves into a leader in the dormitory, athletics, and the greater community. The student willing to risk failure in the classroom becomes the student willing to stretch him or herself by studying abroad. The student that offers a unique perspective in class discussions evolves into the student willing to stand before the student body and share that independent thinking with the community as a school leader. As Proctor's mission states, our goal is to unearth the confidence in every student to embrace this journey. 



Klare commented following her fall induction, "It was such an honor to be inducted and recognized for my efforts. I am very grateful to have been given Proctor's nurturing environment, as it supported my growth in the four characteristics of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character that the NHS strives to recognize within students. These are values that are not only important to demonstrate within a school, but also within our broader communities." 



Congratulations to Tyler, Brad, Breanna, Sage, Kate, Michaela, Tyler, Klare, Alice, Do Yun, Taylor, Ryan and Kelsey not only on their induction to the National Honor Society, but for their tremendous contributions to the Proctor community over the past four years.
Both Breanna and Taylor were inducted into the National Honor Society today. Both served as school leaders this year, played a combined 15 seasons of varsity sports, and took advantage of off-campus programs during their years at Proctor.
Brad arrived at Proctor as a junior and almost immediately stepped into a dorm leader role while also captaining the Varsity Hockey team this year.
Tyler also arrived at Proctor as a junior and quickly jumped into his six AP classes, a dorm leader position in Carr House, and was a two-season captain with the Varsity Hockey and Varsity Baseball team this year.
Yun has served as a dorm leader the past two years, helping set a tremendous example for younger students with his work ethic in the classroom.
Klare commented following her induction in the fall, "This is the greatest honor I have received while being at Proctor and it would not have been possible without the nurturing community that Proctor is."
Sage spent two terms studying off-campus while maintaining an incredibly challenging academic schedule and competing on the Nordic Ski team, volunteering for PEA and committing much of her summers to volunteer work as well.
While Ryan's Ocean Classroom experience was transformational, his contributions to the community through student leadership and involvement in the spring musical each year have been equally impressive.
Kelsey's contributions to the community beyond her academic excellence span tremendous talents in the arts and seven seasons of varsity athletics.

Tyler has grown into a quiet leader on campus, serving as the Cross Country team captain while also earning the team's MVP honor the last two years and setting the course record at Proctor.
Alice, too, has balanced time off-campus with her responsibilities as a dorm leader, member of student leadership, the eastern ski team and the varsity tennis team during her time at Proctor.
Kate often references the impact of her term on Mountain Classroom in her personal growth, but her involvement in the arts and her willingness to fully engage in her courses that have also shaped her experience at Proctor.
